According to a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IREA), Jordan's share of renewable energy electricity increased from almost zero in 2014 to about 20% in 2020, thanks to a favorable governmental framework and policies that support the deployment of renewable energy technologies, including solar photovoltaic (PV) and onshore wind energy.

However, in its report entitled Jordan's Renewable Energy Preparedness Assessment, developed in cooperation with the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, IREA indicated that the private sector would have the opportunity to participate in supporting national energy projects to help the country generate 31% of its total renewable energy capacity.

The report identifies a series of policy measures that will help promote the transition from Jordanian energy to renewable energy.

"The recommendations of this report are in line with the newly released Energy Strategy 2020-2030 and its action plan," said by an engineer from Jordan Department of Energy and Mineral Resources.

The report outlines policy action areas to improve energy security and diversify supply by accelerating the use of renewable energy, and suggests the feasibility of promoting end-use electrification and increasing investment in energy transformation by domestic institutions.

"We know that strong partnerships between the public and private sectors are necessary to achieve these ambitious goals, we are also keen to work with international friends and partners to make renewable energy the main pillar of Jordan's energy sector", the authority said.

Director-General of IREA said: "Jordan has a huge potential for renewable energy resources, which, if realized, will drive post-Covid-19 economic recovery efforts by reducing consumer energy costs, improving national energy security, creating jobs and stimulating sustainable growth."
