Cost Comparison of Agri-solar Projects and Ground-mounted Solar Projects

Researchers from the German Technology and Support Center compared the upfront costs of several types of agri-solar projects and traditional ground-mounted solar projects. In an 88-page report, experts from the research institute researched the aspects of land use rate,  economic issues, German legal framework, social acceptance issues, and current research needs.

The author of the article pointed out that the cost difference between agri-solar projects and ground-mounted projects is very large because of the higher cost of the tracking system. Agri-solar projects also face more system design constraints, because these projects must deal with subsoil issues and are very dependent on the type of specific agriculture use.

Besides, during the approval process, agri-solar project developers may also incur higher costs. These costs include site reading, soil and environmental reports, development plans, and various legal fees. However, land preparation may be a factor in the increase in the cost of traditional solar power plants, because traditional solar projects require ground engineering, while agricultural photovoltaic projects usually do not. However, if land preparation is necessary, the cost of the latter may be much higher.

Scientists estimate that, including the foundation, the total construction cost of an agri-solar power plant is €400/kW. It is estimated that the cost of installing the system is between €130/kW and €220/kW, while the cost of high-transparency modules may rise to €330/kW. The cost of site preparation and installation is between €250/kW and €350/kW. Agri-solar projects that relies on trackers may be more expensive because the installation height of the tracking system may be as high as 6 meters. The cost of the installation height depends on the required application and the height of the equipment structure," the researchers explained.
