Japan is seeking to add more solar power to meet its ambitious 2030 emission reduction targets, which could eventually lead to rooftop solar panels in every building, parking lot and farm in the densely populated country.
According to the statement of the country's environment and trade department, the target is to have 108GW of solar power generation capacity by 2030, which is about 1.7 times the country's previous target and 20GW more than the current installation speed. Japan said earlier this year that it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030 compared with 2013, while the new target strengthens previous commitments under the Paris Agreement.
