An energy community in northern Italy will integrate solar installations with energy storage systems to power 48 homes and a fleet of rented electric cars for a social housing project. This is a collective effort that could be rolled out as soon as 2023.

A 48-apartment community in the northern Italian province of Reggio Emilia will help evaluate the business model of an energy community dedicated to social housing. The testing phase, due to end in December 2022, will show whether and how the model being implemented in the city of Scandiano is replicated.

"The project is expected to install a 60 kW solar system on the roof, together with the 115.2 kWh energy storage system, it will be installed by the end of 2021. An electric car fleet will be introduced next year, and consumer monitoring from September 2020 will continue until the end of 2022. This is to understand the complexities that eventually arise on the ground. ” The project leader said.

The renewable energy community (REC) rules, which came into force in Italy last year, simplify this complex collective self-use project.
