Chems Eddine Chitour, Algeria's Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energy, announced this week that a bid for 1GW of renewable energy capacity will soon be launched. On 29 April, the Algerian government issued a decree in the country's official magazine authorizing the Ministry of chitour to manage and supervise procurement.

The tender will be launched between June and July. It will be divided into ten batches of 100MW each, which will allow the use of foreign funds for planned projects. Besides, the government is working out a purchasable power purchase agreement for the selected projects, and the bidding should include some domestic content requirements for cables, modules and installation structures. It is expected that three more tenders of the same size will be issued each year between 2022 and 2024.

The Algerian government held a bidding for off grid, hybrid solar, diesel and solar projects in 2019. Both rounds are part of the country's plan to deploy 22GW of clean energy power generation capacity, including 13.6GW of solar energy, by 2030. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, by the end of last year, Algeria's solar power generation capacity was about 423MW.
