After introducing new rules for community renewable energy projects in March, Italy released an incentive plan last week to promote the implementation of the new rules.

The Italian government has defined two types of providers and consumers covered by the new rules, namely community energy provider and self-consuming users respectively. The shared electricity among its members will be priced at 0.11 EUR and 0.10 EUR per kilowatt hour respectively for a PPA lasting 20 years.

Self-consuming users refers to a group of power users located in the same building or building complex, while community energy provider is a large entity, which can also include enterprises or public organizations located near the solar systems.

Under the incentive scheme for renewable energy systems up to 200kW, excess power can be uploaded into the grid without any charges, which is expected to encourage the deployment of batteries. There is no bill for self-consumption electricity, but there is also no direct reward. The indirect reward is between 0.13 EUR and 0.20 EUR per kWh.
